Course Information | |||||||||||
Description | This course covers basics of culture and identification of bacteria and microbial ecology. This course is primarily directed at pre-nursing and other pre-allied health majors and covers basics of microbiology. Emphasis is on medical microbiology, infectious diseases, and public health. | ||||||||||

1. Apply scientific reasoning to investigate questions and utilize scientific tools such as microscopes and laboratory equipment to collect and analyze data. You will need an access code for Pearson Mastering Microbiology. The same Pearson Mastering Microbiology Access Code will be used for both Lecture and Lab. You will need the access code in order to watch the MircoLab Videos and/or Lab Technique Videos and to complete the lab questions. Please only purchase the access code from the Lamar State College Bookstore or directly from the Publisher in order to receive the correct access code. |

Lecture Topics Outline |
All lab assignments are completed using information in the textbook, the lab handout, and using the Mastering A&P website. The lab assignments are completed on the Mastering A&P site and are accessed by the link on the LAB course website. The same Pearson Mastering A&P access code is used for both Lecture Pearson Mastering Assignments and Pre-Lab Pearson Mastering Assignments. Attendance in all labs IS REQUIRED. It is NOT possible to attend a lab from a different instructor. It is also NOT possible to take a lab exam from a different lab instructor. If you have questions, you can come by during my office hours, email me at anytime, or post your question in the Discussion Board of the course BlackBoard page. You will need to schedule time to complete exams during their period of availability. You will be able to take an exam after the scheduled availability period, but there will be a time penalty imposed (10% time reduction for each day that student is late taking the exam). Exam I: September 26, 2021 at 6 pm until September 29, 2021 at 11:59 pm Exam II: October 31, 2021 at 6 pm until November 3, 2021 at 11:59 pm Exam III: December 1, 2021 at 6 pm until December 4, 2021 at 11:59 pm This is an online class. It is YOUR responsibility to have a RELIABLE computer AND Internet access for the duration of this course. Please note that while many of the course materials can be accessed using a cell phone and/or tablet device, there are many questions on the homework assignments that can only be accessed on a computer (desktop or laptop). In addition, EXAMS CAN ONLY BE TAKEN ON A LAPTOP OR DESKTOP COMPUTER. Determination of Final Grade |
The grade for this laboratory course is based on the scores of three laboratory exams (100% Laboratory Exams). No grades are dropped when calculating averages. No makeup exams are given, and there are NO re-takes on any exam. All lab exams must be taken as scheduled during your lab period. Lecture and Lab grades are NOT combined. Each course will be graded independently. Unexcused Exams that are not taken as scheduled will receive a grade of zero. |

You will be able to take an exam after the scheduled availability period, but there will be a time penalty imposed (10% time reduction for each day that student is late taking the exam). If you miss an exam because of an excused absence, your lowest lecture exam score will be used as the score for the exam that you missed. Excused absences include medical and family emergencies and are determined at the instructor's discretion. You can only miss one exam with an excused absence (excluding the final), and you must take the final exam. Poor preparation or conflict with other scheduled exams is not a valid excuse for missing an exam. |
